Kirsty J. H. is an academic, educator, and designer whose work brings together critical theory, creative practice, and a deep commitment to supporting others.
Currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Western Australia, Kirsty's research explores the ways parenthood and reproduction are discussed in society and how these conversations shape our understanding of ourselves and the people around us.
Their work is grounded in curiosity, care, and thoughtful reflection. Drawing on critical theory, Kirsty enjoys exploring complex concepts while remaining attentive to the lived experiences behind them. This approach allows them to navigate both rigorous academic inquiry and the slower, more restorative practices of knitting.
Care and connection sit at the heart of everything Kirsty does. Since 2017, they have designed and taught student-centred learning experiences across a diverse range of tertiary subjects in Western Australia. Their teaching encourages critical thinking, creativity, and confidence, and has been consistently recognised through positive student feedback.
Kirsty's thoughtful and highly organised approach also informs their creative brand, Soft Mistakes. Through accessible knitting patterns and practical design guidance, they help makers build skills, confidence, and enjoyment in their craft. Their designs are known for their geometric precision, clear instructions, and welcoming approach to learning.
A key philosophy underpinning both Kirsty's creative and academic work is the belief that mistakes are valuable. In knitting, mistakes are a natural and often helpful part of the making process. Similarly, their research challenges the idea that there is only one "normal" way to live, instead recognising diverse life paths as meaningful, valid, and often deeply creative acts of resilience.
Whether teaching, researching, writing, or designing, Kirsty is passionate about sharing knowledge, supporting others, and exploring the many different ways people make sense of the world.
